Speakers and Presentations

Pennsylvania Conference Treasurer, Dr. Carlos Charnichart will begin our day with worship, treasury news, updates, and reports, and will discuss Global Stewardship. Before joining our Pennsylvania team, Carlos Charnichart served the Hope Channel and the Review and Herald. He has a rich experience not only in accounting, but also as a business owner, manager, and sales and marketing executive. Carlos has served as an adjunct professor at Washington Adventist University and was the dean for the School of Accounting and Business Administration at Montemorelos University in Mexico. He has a masters in Business and Administration, a bachelor’s in Accounting and Administration, and a doctorate in Business Administration.

Emmanuel Asiedu,  treasurer for the Columbia Union Conference, will explain the role and responsibilities of the local church treasurer. He previously worked as an associate treasurer at the Chesapeake Conference, an audit manager for the General Conference Auditing Service and a staff accountant at Ahern Adcock Devlin, LLP (Calif.). Asiedu has a Master of Business Administration from La Sierra University (Calif.), a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Valley View University in Ghana and is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CMA (Certified Management Accountant), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and a CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner).

Lisa Rhode, deputy attorney general, will discuss small trusts, restricted funds, and legal issues with donors. Rhode is a Senior Deputy Attorney General with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General in the Charitable Trusts and Organizations Section. In addition to her law practice, Lisa is a co-editor of the Probate, Estates and Fiduciaries Code Annotated. She is a member of the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations and their Probate and Tax Sections.  She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987, her J.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1990, and her LLM from Villanova University School of Law in 2000.

Vilma Reynolds has worked for Adventist Risk Management since 2003 and serves as the account executive for the Columbia Union Conference, Columbia, Maryland. She’ll discuss insurance policies, current risks, and more, plus answer your questions.

She and her husband, a pastor for the Chesapeake Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, have one son and live in Maryland. They have an adult son, Christopher, who is a precision machinist and welder in the United States Air Force. Vilma enjoys gardening, walking, reading, cooking and serving the church.

Thomas Wetmore, associate general counsel for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, will discuss local church tax issues.

Wetmore received his B.S. (Mental Health) from Columbia Union College in 1980 and his J.D. from George Washington University in 1984.  He is a member of the Maryland, District of Columbia, and Florida bars. He is also a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel, and the American Bar Association where he has been an active member of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the Tax Section since 1989 and is currently co-chair of the Church and Religious Organizations subcommittee. He was appointed Associate General Counsel in 1984.

Pennsylvania Conference Auditor Rodney Brown will introduce and share an overview of the new church treasury software. Rodney also serves as the Safety Coordinator and IT Director for the Pennsylvania Conference and is our host for this training event.

Before joining our Pennsylvania team, Rodney served with Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in their IT and accounting departments, and with Adventist Risk Management (ARM) in their claims department. He also served with a local fire department as a volunteer emergency medical technician. Rodney received his Business Administration-Finance and a minor Computer Science degree from Columbia Union College in 1994.

Pennsylvania Conference Associate Treasurer Paulo Acosta will lead a breakout training session on the Jewel Church Accounting System, a software designed to meet the needs of local church treasurers as well as the conference treasury departments of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, handling check writing, receipts, budgeting, reports, and more.

Paulo and his wife, Juliana, have two daughters, Breanna and Emma, and are members of the Hampden Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church where Paulo and Juliana are leaders with the Pathfinder and Adventurer Clubs.
